Performance Analysis of Multichannel and Multi-Traffic on Wireless Communication Networks Feature

This book attempts to present exact and approximate analytical solution methods and techniques using queueing theory in the complex multimedia traffic systems with procedures of random multiple access schemes. In particular, this book presents how to approximate the system performance of discrete-time multimedia networks, the probability distribution of the interarrival time of internetwork packets at the adjacent network and the higher moments of the transmission departure distribution and delay in wireless multimedia communication environment. In general the modeling of discrete-time multimedia communication systems are more complex than that of continuous-time systems because multiple state changes can occur from one time-unit to the next. This complicates the analysis of the model. This book also discusses numerical results that illustrate the applications of the theory and various properties.

Application and Theory of Petri Nets 1993: 14th International Conference, Chicago, Illinois, USA, June 21-25, 1993. Proceedings (Lecture Notes in Computer Science) Feature

This volume contains the proceedings of the 14th International Conference onApplication and Theory of Petri Nets. The aim of the Petri net conferences is to create a forum for discussing progress in the application and theory of Petri nets. Typically, the conferences have 150-200 participants, one third of whom come from industry, while the rest are from universities and research institutes. The volume includes three invited papers, "Modeling and enactment of workflow systems" (C.A. Ellis, G.J. Nutt), "Interleaving functional and performance structural analysis of net models" (M. Silva), and "FSPNs: fluid stochastic Petri nets" (K.S. Trivedi, V.G. Kulkarni), together with 26 full papers (selected from 102 submissions) and 6 project papers.

Description:
We develop a model for optimal multi-period operation of a multi-reservoir system for a basin operating under a conjunctive use of ground and surface water. The inflows to the main reservoir as well as the irrigation demands are stochastic. The ground stock suffers from severe overdrafts increasing the risk of the total depletion of the aquifer in addition to the quality degradation and the threat of seawater intrusion. We treat the uncertainties in the inflows through chance constraints and penalties of failure to release the planned amounts of surface water from the main reservoir. However, we reflect uncertainties in irrigation demands by opting for deficit irrigation and using adequate production functions to estimate the expected crop yields. We attempt in the model to avoid large deficits except perhaps for periods where crop yields are relatively insensitive to water shortage. The objective is to maximize the total expected profit of the entire region. We illustrate the model through an example partially based on some hypothetical data.

Multi-item stochastic and fuzzy-stochastic inventory models under two restrictions [An article from: Computers and Operations Research] Feature

This digital document is a journal article from Computers and Operations Research, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Multi-item stochastic and fuzzy-stochastic inventory models are formulated under total budgetary and space constraints. Here, the inventory costs are directly proportional to the respective quantities, unit purchase/production cost is inversely related to the demand and replenishment/production rate is assumed to vary directly with demand. Shortages are allowed but fully backlogged. Here, for both models, demand and budgetary resource are assumed to be random. In fuzzy-stochastic model, in addition to the above assumptions, available storage space and total expenditure are imprecise in nature. Impreciseness in the parameters have been expressed with the help of linear membership functions. Assuming random variables to be independent and to follow normal distributions, the models have been formulated as stochastic and fuzzy-stochastic non-linear programming problems. The stochastic problem is first reduced to the equivalent single objective or multiple objectives problems following chance-constraint method. The problem with single objective is solved by a gradient-based technique whereas fuzzy technique is applied to the multi-objective one. In the same way, the fuzzy-stochastic programming problem is first reduced to a corresponding equivalent fuzzy non-linear programming problem and then it is solved by fuzzy non-linear programming (FNLP) following Zimmermann technique. The models are illustrated numerically and the results of different models are compared.

A generic stochastic model for supply-and-return network design [An article from: Computers and Operations Research] Feature

This digital document is a journal article from Computers and Operations Research, published by Elsevier in 2007. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
This paper presents a generic stochastic model for the design of networks comprising both supply and return channels, organized in a closed loop system. Such situations are typical for manufacturing/re-manufacturing type of systems in reverse logistics. The model accounts for a number of alternative scenarios, which may be constructed based on critical levels of design parameters such as demand or returns. We describe a decomposition approach to this model, based on the branch-and-cut procedure known as the integer L-shaped method. Computational results in an illustrative numerical setting show a consistent performance efficiency of the method. Moreover, the stochastic solution features a significant improvement in terms of average performance over the individual scenario solutions. A modeling and solution methodology as presented here can contribute to the efficient solution of network design models under uncertainty for reverse logistics.
